JOSEPH ATUBOKIKI AJIENKA, the 7th Vice-Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, is the Emmanuel Egbogah Chair and Professor of Petroleum Engineering, University of Port Harcourt.  He was the pioneer Director and member of the Governing Board of the Institute of Petroleum Studies from 2003 to 2010. He was a member of the Governing Council of the University (2006-2007). He was Head, Department of Petroleum Engineering (1995-1997), Coordinator Master of Environmental Engineering Programme (2000-2003) and Visiting Lecturer, Department of Fuel and Energy, University of Leeds (1992). He was appointed Adjunct Professor of Petroleum Engineering, Rivers State University of Science & Technology, PH.  

He holds BSc with honours from the University of Ibadan, MEng and PhD from the University of Port Harcourt, all in Petroleum Engineering.  He worked as a Senior Production Technologist in Shell Petroleum Development Company (1993-1995).
 
Professor Ajienka is a registered Engineer (COREN), Member of several Professional Bodies among which are Nigerian Society of Engineers, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the Energy Institute (UK).  He is a Registered Environmental Practitioner (NREP, USA), Fellow of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Management, Fellow Institute of Industrial Administration, Fellow Nigerian Institute of Safety Professionals and Fellow Nigerian Environmental Society. 
 
He has published over 100 technical papers and reports; 10 books and Monographs. He is a recipient of SPE Nigeria Production Engineering Prize (1991); SPE African Regional Award for Production and Operations, 2008; NREP International Award for Professionalism in Higher Education, 2009; University of PH Alumni Award of Excellence, 2008; and Nigeria Petroleum Golden Jubilee Award of Excellence (Who is Who in 50 years of Oil and Gas Production).   He was elected chairman Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) Committee on Petroleum Upstream.
 
Professor Ajienka served as a Member of Accreditation Teams by COREN and NUC as well as the National Accreditation Board of Ghana. In November 2007, he participated in the International Seminar on Education & Energy by TOTAL in Paris, attended by 50 Professors from 21 countries.
 
He is married to Mrs. Mercy Finelady Ajienka, herself an alumna of the University of Port Harcourt.  The marriage is blessed with three children.
