HISTORY OF ACCOUNTING DEPARTMENT:

The faculty of Management Sciences of which the Department of accounting is a component, came out of the erstwhile School of Management and Business Administration, in the Graduate School arrangement. Only the Master of Business Administration (MBA) in accounting programme was run between 1980 and 1984. With the transformation of the Graduate School of Management and Business Administration to the Faculty of Management Sciences, a full fledged Department of accounting emerged. A B.Sc Accounting, Ph.D Accounting and recently, M.Sc Accounting programmes, were added to the MBA accounting programme inherited from the Graduate School. To support the policy of the University to enhance internally generated revenue, the Department also has part-time B.Sc programmes. The B.sc Accounting programme is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). The B.Sc Accounting programme has successfully undergone post-accreditation visitations by ICAN in 1988, 2004 and 2009 and the Department was given full accreditation status in all. The Department boasts of a great number of highly trained and competent accountants contributing to the Nigerian economy and society. Three acting Heads of Department and one Coordinator, namely Dr. D.P.S. Asechemie, Mr. C.O.J. Ebirim, Dr. C. O. Ofurum and Dr. E.A.L Ibanichuka had served as Head of Department between 1984 and 2012.
